Stones

We have long attached different meanings to various gemstones. They were originally used as amulets and talismans to either attract or repel different types of spirits and energies. Even today, there is something mystical about certain stones: we pay at least a modicum of attention to our own personal birthstones, and the ring of choice for many brides is a diamond (no thanks to clever advertising!).

Whether you believe that these stones hold particular energies, or you simply find a color combination that you find visually pleasing, wearing them thoughtfully can indeed have a positive effect on your daily activities. Even the simple act of paying attention to what you’re wearing and why can have a surprising impact on your day.

A brief note about stones and the zodiac: The pieces I create are based on stones which reflect the energies of the planets associated with the signs of the zodiac. This is not an exact science, and there is no “one” correct way to choose the stones you would like to use, other than by the energies they attract. Feel free to choose pieces other than the one assigned to your zodiac sign if you wish! It’s all about the energy and how it makes you feel.

Metaphysical Properties of Gemstones

Agate

Energy: Projective
Planet: Mercury
Element: Fire
Powers: Strength, courage, longevity, gardening, love, healing, protection

There are many varieties of agate, but I primarily use brown. It is a protective stone, which emphasizes power and courage. It can also be used as a wealth talisman, and for success in any undertaking.

Amethyst

Energy: Receptive
Planet: Jupiter
Element: Water
Powers: Dreams, overcoming alcoholism, healing, psychism, peace, love, protection against thieves, courage, happiness

Amethyst is a very popular stone, well known for its spiritual value. It is a very nice, calming stone; it helps calm fears and raise one’s spirits. It is a stone of pure, true, emotional love.

Aquamarine

Energy: Receptive
Planet: Moon
Element: Water
Powers: Psychism, peace, courage, purification

Aquamarine is a stone of peace, joy, and happiness, especially in relationships. Like amethyst, it has very nice calming properties, as well as cleansing, purifying energy.

Aventurine

Energy: Projective
Planet: Mercury
Element: Air
Powers: Mental powers, eyesight, gambling, money, peace, healing, luck

Aventurine is worn to calm out-of-control emotions and to strengthen mental agility. It also has been known as a gambler’s talisman, though I personally have not tested it as such! It has been used to increase perception, to stimulate creativity, and to enhance intelligence.

Beryl

Energy: Receptive
Planet: Moon
Element: Water
Powers: Psychism, healing, love, energy

Bery is a very interesting stone, in that it is said to protect against deliberate manipulation—politicians and aggressive salespersons, beware! It is a stone that facilitates understanding, and was used in the sixteenth century as a prescription to win arguments, amiably.

Bloodstone

Energy: Projective
Planet: Mars
Element: Fire
Powers: Halting bleeding, healing, victory, courage, legal matters, wealth, strength, power, business, agriculture

As the name would suggest, bloodstone was used in ancient times to stop bleeding and protect soldiers from injury. (It should be stated that there are better ways to accomplish this today!) In modern times, bloodstone is worn to increase physical strength, and to dispel anger.

Carnelian

Energy: Projective
Planet: Sun
Element: Fire
Powers: Protection, peace, eloquence, healing, courage, sexual energy

If you’re not a fan of public speaking, wearing carnelian might help you get through that big presentation! Carnelian helps calm fears and self-doubts, while bolstering confidence and eloquence in speech.

Jade

Energy: Receptive
Planet: Venus
Element: Water
Powers: Love, healing, longevity, wisdom, protection, gardening, prosperity, money

Jade is considered a sacred stone in China. The Chinese believed it had the power to prolong one’s life. It is also an ancient love-attracting stone, either worn to attract love or given in hopes of that love being returned.

Onyx

Energy: Projective
Planet: Saturn
Element: Fire
Powers: Protection

While other stones are simply said to be “protective” stones, onyx specifically relates to protection against negativity from outside forces—that is, negativity that is aimed at you, rather than coming from within (e.g. negative self-talk). Onyx can create a kind of barrier from outside influences, allowing the wearer to focus on his or her health from within.

Rose Quartz

Energy: Receptive
Planet: Venus
Element: Water
Powers: Protection, healing, psychism, power

Rose quartz is a beautiful stone for attracting love. It also promotes peace, happiness, and fidelity in established relationships. It pairs nicely with jade, another love-attracting stone, in a visually-pleasing pink and green combination.

Sardonyx

Energy: Projective
Planet: Mars
Element: Fire
Powers: Protection, courage, marital happiness, eloquence, peace, luck

Sardonyx has a variety of uses, primarily in the area of communication. Wear sardonyx to promote courage and fearlessness, which can be particularly helpful in resolving marital issues. It also promotes eloquence in public speaking, helpful for teachers, lawyers, and anyone who needs to share their ideas concisely.

Serpentine

Energy: Projective
Planet: Saturn
Element: Fire
Powers: Protection

Serpentine was used by ancient Assyrians so that the gods and goddesses would doubly bless them. A more modern application is protection from harmful forces of nature, such as poisonous insects and reptiles—though I will admit, I haven’t yet tried wearing this during mosquito season!

Tiger's-eye

Energy: Projective
Planet: Sun
Element: Fire
Powers: Money, protection, courage, energy, luck, divination

Tiger’s-eye is a natural pairing with sunstone, usually with gold chain rather than silver. Together, these attract the positive energy of the sun, which is a good all-purpose combination for promoting positive change in any endeavor.
